There is no standard definition which adequately describes the many shapes, sizes and designs of today’s caravans or the comfort. A caravan can be compact enough to be towed behind a small car or it can be a luxurious palace-on-the road. You get what you want in a caravan. There are many different styles available, which can be anything from 3 metres to more than 10 metres long. Most are self-contained, which means they have many of the comforts of home, including shower and toilet (some even have separate ensuites), refrigerator, gas stove, microwave oven and more. Some caravans are self-sufficient using solar set ups.
Pop-Top caravans have all the features of a normal caravan and offer improved fuel economy. Their low profile can make them easier to tow and can reduce wind-drag while travelling; they are also easy to store in a garage or carport. When on-site, the top section is raised to provide full head-room.
The Camper Trailer is a very economical and practical way to go caravanning. It is also extremely comfortable and convenient. Many people choose a camper trailer because it is a compact unit which tows smoothly behind almost any vehicle, is easy to handle, set up and doesn’t take much space to store. Children love camper trailers because there’s a bit of magic about them. Within minutes they are transformed from a small unit on wheels to roomy holiday accommodation. There’s surprisingly lots of room in a camper trailer, which is fully equipped with gas cooker, refrigerator, table and sink.
The Tent Trailer is the most effective way to get into RVing. In their most basic format they comprise a box trailer with a tent section that lifts out to make sleeping space. The trailer section can be used for storing cooking and sleeping items. Due to their size and weight they are easily towed by smaller vehicles. Tent trailers are also available in an off-road version making them very adaptable for rugged terrain use. There are many tent trailer designs on the market catering for all purposes and budgets. Tent trailers also come in a fully-equipped format such as camper trailers.
Motorhomes are built on small and larger truck chassis and have the same features as caravans. Like caravans, they are made for year-round holidaying and have such facilities as toilets and showers and air conditioners, making them self-contained and extremely comfortable. Motorhomes are easy to drive. One of their appealing features is that they can be used by passengers while travelling. This is a real bonus for a family travelling long distances, when children often get bored and fidgety.
Campervans are fitted out specifically for camping. Often the roof is raised higher for easier standing and mobility, cupboards are installed along with a central table, seating and beds (additional bunks for children may also be a feature). Campervans can accommodate a couple or a whole family comfortably. Standard equipment – as in all caravans – includes water tank, stove and refrigerator. A benefit of owning a campervan is flexibility for year round use, doubling as a vehicle for normal, private transport while at home. As a result it does not create additional storage or parking problems.
Slide-On Campers are designed to turn your everyday work ute into an RV.Designed to suit either flat tray utes or full-bodied utes, they come in many different sizes and configurations. Slide-On Campers give the added benefit of still being able to tow while travelling. They are very popular for those who are interested in towing motor bikes, horse floats, go-cart or racing car trailers.
The term 5th Wheeler is derived due to the motorhome connecting to the towing vehicle via a turntable or ‘wheel’ allowing articulated motion. 5th Wheelers usually afford the same facilities and comforts of other motorhomes but can vary in size with some almost as large as semi trailers. The additional size allows for more creature comforts and accommodation for larger family groups.
