2019 Gordon Harris Turn Around Award winner, BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort

Gordon Harris was the founding President of Caravan Parks Association of Queensland in 1966.  Gordon built and operated both Aspley Acres Caravan Park and Bribie Island Caravan Park and then remained interested in the industry even after selling both his parks.

In 2003 Gordon was awarded life membership and in recognition of his incredible contribution this memorial award was named after him.

This award recognises an operator that has made significant changes to their business to effectively “turn it around”.

Award Criteria

Criteria used to determine the winner of this award include:

  • Improvement in key metrics such as turnover, occupancy, and RevPAR
  • Improvement in customer ratings on review sites including, but not limited to, TripAdvisor, WikiCamps, Booking.com, ReviewPro
  • Changes to the physical appearance of the park/introduction of new facilities
  • The time frame of the turnaround

 

Your Nomination

Please ensure your nomination includes:

  • A description of the business as it was, including any key metrics
  • A description of the changes made to the business and the reason the changes were made
  • The current key metrics with a comparison to the initial results (i.e. a 90% increase)
  • Before and after images
  • A current photo of the business or a copy of the business’ logo

A nomination form is available for this award however nominations do not need to be on this form as long as the criteria are met

Examples of potential initiatives:

  • Rowes Bay Beachfront Holiday Park achieved an increase from 78% to 90% in the parks Global Review Index and an increase in net profit of over 65% through the introduction of new marketing and sustainability activities, an increased focus on customer service and improved industry engagement
  • Cape York Camping – Punsand Bay doubled the annual number of guests at their park over a 3 year period following their initial renovations and ongoing improvements
  • BIG4 Marine Mackay Tourist Park saw a 45% increase in revenue and occupancy through investment in the park
  • Kurrimine Beach Holiday Park saw cabin revenue grow by 60% and park revenue increase by 50% through the introduction of new facilities

  • News Story on the Environmental Initiative and your business on the Members Portal of the Caravanning Queensland and In News eNewsletter
  • A story about the business on the Caravanning Queensland consumer site
  • A complimentary 1/12th page advert in the 2021 edition of the Queensland Caravan Parks & Touring Accommodation Directory

 

Conditions of entry

The nomination must be for a current financial park member of Caravan Parks Association of Queensland.

Nominations must be received no later than midnight on 15 March 2020.
