Toowoomba
Perched high on the Great Dividing Range, Toowoomba is a city renowned for tree-lined streets, spectacular floral gardens, cooler summer days and views over the Lockyer Valley. Toowoomba is Queensland Garden City.
Exploring Toowoomba's magnificent parks and gardens should be high on the 'to do list' of every visitor. Visit Picnic Point for range views and bushwalking, stroll through Queens Park’s giant trees and floral gardens and don’t miss the tranquil Japanese Garden. With more than 150 public parks and gardens, Toowoomba becomes an extravaganza of colours in spring and the city celebrates with its Carnival of Flowers in September. Toowoomba’s beauty lasts all year round as summer brings another sea of vibrant floral colour and Autumn’s changes create a brilliant display of red and gold foliage.
Beneath this face of natural beauty, the city conceals treasures of yesteryear, from fine architecture, to museums and antique centres. Cobb & Co. Museum houses Australia’s largest collection of horse-drawn vehicles. The Royal Bulls Head Inn, built in 1847, was a popular haunt for the local settlers and is now open for visitors to explore. There are more than twenty antique stores in and around Toowoomba so pick up a copy of the Antiques Trail to find your way from treasure to treasure. Viewing a performance in the magnificently restored art deco Empire Theatre is truly a treat so plan this into your itinerary.
Darling Downs
Surrounding Toowoomba is the Darling Downs, Queensland’s prime agricultural land. The Darling Downs is a patchwork landscape coloured with bright sunflowers, golden fields of wheat and blankets of pure white cotton. Amongst the wide plains, rolling hills and pockets of rainforest, you'll find townships where intriguing histories, fine wine, grand homesteads and regular country celebrations are a way of life.
A visit to the Darling Downs would not be complete without sampling the local wines. Across the Darling Downs you will find cellar doors in the most spectacular locations, on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, within heritage mansions and nestled amongst rolling green hills.
